Food Safety Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan appealed to the public about brown marmorated stink bug
The Food Safety Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (FSAA) continues to take preventive measures with the relevant authorities in order to prevent the spread of brown marble tortoiseshell throughout the country.
During the monitoring, it was found that brown marble tortoise migrating from Georgia neighboring Azerbaijan is observed in some villages of the north-western and western regions of our country. The pest, which causes a lot of damage to the Georgian economy (hazelnut orchards and fruit and vegetable farms), is also found in the southern regions of Russia and Turkey.
We note that the brown marble tortoise feeds on more than 300 plants, significantly reducing their productivity. In order to prevent the Pest from entering residential and auxiliary premises for wintering, the windows in these structures must be closed with a net. In residential buildings, special attention should be paid to those parts of cabinets and furniture that are leaning against the wall, behind stacked objects and pictures hanging on the wall, under carpets, the ventilation system and partitions of other engineering structures. When the pest is detected, it must be collected and destroyed with a broom, vacuum cleaner and other means.
Pest control measures should also be carried out in spring and summer. The lower part of the leaves of the maximum number of Berry and vegetable crops, the places of joining of leaf shoots and fruit stalks should be carefully inspected in different parts of the arable land, especially in the edge (border) areas. Collecting (aggregation) pheromone traps should be hung on farmsteads and farm structures where the pest has been detected.
It is considered effective to use bifenthrin-containing preparations for chemical control. Spraying should be carried out 5 times with an interval of 8-2 days. In the event that a high growth of the next generation of the pest is observed, spraying can be repeated. When brown marble tortoise is detected, farm owners and locals should take control measures only on the recommendation of experts.
It should be noted that adult individuals and larvae of the pest are spread by vehicles, wood materials, fresh fruits and vegetables, seedlings, cut flowers and other means. At the same time, adult individuals of the brown marble pest are able to spread naturally, that is, by flying and covering a distance of up to 35-100 kilometers. It is recommended to be attentive to citizens, to inform the relevant government agencies and “1003-call center” of FSAA about this when observing pests, as well as to take appropriate measures individually.
