January 20, 1990 entered the modern history of Azerbaijan as one of the most tragic days, as well as as a heroic page of our people. This date has become a symbol of national independence and the struggle for freedom. The patriotic children of Azerbaijan, who cherished the freedom of their native land and people, died that night and rose to the peak of martyrdom.

The bloody tragedy of January 20 received a political and legal assessment at the state level only under the leadership of the National Leader of our people, Heydar Aliyev.

In connection with the thirty-third anniversary of the tragedy, a commemorative event was held in Naftalan on January 20. At the event, the cherished memory of the children of the Motherland who became martyrs for the freedom of Azerbaijan was noted with deep respect.

The event was attended by the head of the city Executive committee, heads of law enforcement agencies, employees of departments, enterprises and organizations, families of martyrs, representatives of the intelligentsia, the public and residents. A memorial complex was erected in memory of the martyrs, where prayers were read for the souls of the martyrs.

As everywhere else in our republic, in the city of Naftalan, as a sign of respect for the bright memory of our martyrs, state flags were lowered, at 12:00 a minute of silence was observed in memory of the martyrs, traffic was stopped, sound signals were given by cars.
